Current Debates in Social Anthropology

Mittwoch, 20.03.2024

In this course, we discuss recent debates in social anthropology. Departing from postmodern, postcolonial and feminist interventions as well as from effects of globalization relevant twists and turns as well as continuities, ruptures and innovations are introduced. We ask what feminist anthropology explores today and what it contributes to kinship, sexualities and artificial reproduction. Furthermore, we discuss how studies on globalization and nationalism have been transformed and are now capable to illuminate political tensions and right-wing populism. We also look at border studies and studies on state institutions or apparatuses that contribute to an understanding of security and surveillance. We examine how an anthropology of humanitarianism explains crises, conflicts and catastrophes and how the affective and the moral turn contribute to the examination of borders, asylum and migration. We will include relevant current ethnographies and scientific articles in order to identify different turns and controversial debates within social anthropology.
