Music, Sustainability and Environment: Case Studies from the Arctic
Dienstag, 19.03.2024
In this master seminar we will study various cultures of the Arctic regions and will investigate what effect the climate change has on their ways of living and how this is mirrored in their traditional and popular music. A special focus is first set on traditional styles, such as yoik or vuelia-styles of the Scandinavian Sami people, the throat singing games Katajjaq and Rekutkar of the Inuit and Ainu people and the guttural songs Pi? Eynen of the Siberian Chukchi. Instrumental drumming traditions, as well as modern forms of musical expression, such as popular music and rap/ hip hop, will also be investigated.
