Seminar: Language and Power

Our social interactions are very much shaped by asymmetrical power relations. How do these power relations bear on our linguistic exchanges? We cannot understand what we say, how we say it, and with/about/for whom we speak without taking different social positions and the relations between them into account. By engaging with literature from (feminist and social) philosophy of language, critical race theory, and political philosophy, we are going to think about the various ways in which power enters linguistic meaning and exchanges. The focus will be on the following questions: How is it possible to structurally derogate people by “merely” using words? What problems do arise in speaking for, about, and to others? Are there injustices which are primarily discursive? What is the relationship between asymmetrical power relations and the meaning of specific words? How do different types of meaning (social, linguistic) relate to each other? What are strategies of linguistic self-empowerment?
