Fluid Mechanics

Dienstag, 19.03.2024

This course provides an introduction to the field of fluid mechanics. In 13 two-hour lectures different aspects of fluid mechanics are presented. The weekly homework assignments are explained to the students during the exercise lessons (immediately following the lectures). In these assignments the material from the lecture shall be applied. The topics of this course range from viscous, ideal and compressible flows, over aerodynamics, all the way to turbulent flows. Because of the wide range of topics that will be touched during this course, it will only be possible to present some exemplary results and basic concepts. It is the aim of the course to give the students a solid overview on the different aspects of fluid mechanics and to introduce them to the pertinent methods used for investigating flow phenomena. Most of the lecture material will be based on the mathematical description of fluid mechanics. The students will learn to study flows on the basis of dimensional analysis, to apply the appropriate governing equations and to solve these equations for some selected flow problems. In addition to this theoretical approach to fluid mechanics, there are lectures specifically dedicated to experimental and computational methods of fluid mechanics.
