MA-Seminar: William Forsythe: Processing Choreography
Dienstag, 21.03.2023
William Forsythe (born in 1949) is arguably one of the most significant and controversial
dance makers of the last century – taking the tradition of ballet in ground breaking directions.
This seminar will familiarize students with the artistic work and dance scholarship
surrounding William Forsythe, curated from my close perspective as a dance scholar and
former Forsythe dancer. The course will broadly survey:
• Forsythe’s artistic works (ballets, performance installations, films and choreographic
objects)
• Forsythe’s testimony (essays, interviews and artistic research projects)
• Forsythe scholarship (Brandstetter, Caspersen, Driver, Huschka, Kaiser, Maar, Siegmund,
Spier, Vass-Rhee, Waterhouse).
We will process choreography in the doubled sense of exploring the aesthetic processes
manifested in Forsythe’s productions, as well as interpreting how these artistic artefacts
have been reflected upon by scholars, dance critics and Forsythe himself.
The seminar lectures and texts will be predominantly in English.
