Seminar MA: Postcolonial Humanism

Mittwoch, 20.03.2024

Postcolonial thought has criticised liberal humanism for its implications in the racialisation of the understanding and organisation of humankind. From its beginnings, postcolonial thinkers have developed alternative humanist positions. These are at the centre of this course, in which we discuss two positions and their theoretical genealogy. Beginning from Achille Mbembe’s conceptualization of Afropolitanism as one current formulation of post-colonial humanism, this seminar explores its roots in the writings of Franz Fanon, Aimé Césaire, WEB du Bois or others. Second, taking up recent decolonial approaches of epistemic reconstruction developed in different Latin American contexts (e.g. Walter Mignolo, Aníbal Quijano, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Escobar or others), we explore the relation and differences between the humanist and post-humanist postcolonial positions.

Introductory readings:
Franz Fanon 1961: the Wretched of the Earth,
Walter Mignolo & Catherine Walsh 2018: On decoloniality; Concepts, Analytics, Praxis
Achille Mbembe 2021: Out of the dark night; Essays on Decolonization
Arturo Escobar 2020: Pluriversal Politics; The Real and the Possible
