Micropollutants in the environment

Dienstag, 19.03.2024

The rapid increase of synthetic chemicals in the last decades has led to an intensification in the numbers and amounts of contaminants reaching the environment. These anthropogenic chemicals can pose a risk to aquatic and atmospheric environments, ecosystems in general, and human health. Therefore, understanding their different transport processes and reaction mechanisms in different environmental compartments is of great importance. This lecture will focus on the source, transport, transformation, sink, and ecological impact of micropollutants in aquatic, atmospheric, and soil systems by using tools such as physicochemical properties, chemical partitioning, transformation reactions, and risk assessment. Furthermore, ongoing monitoring campaigns and political measures to prevent contaminants to reach natural systems will be discussed.
