The social acceptance of renewable energy in comparative perspective

The transition from fossil to renewable energy has been one of the central challenges of contemporary nation-states. To get the transition going, technical knowledge about the optimal deployment of technologies – which energy generation technology would need to be placed where and at which installed capacity – has clearly been insufficient. At least as important is a profound understanding of how, why and under which social circumstances these facilities may be constructed and operated. This is – in fact – a political science question, as the uncovering of these social circumstances amounts to asking about the appropriateness and effectiveness of policy-measures and -mixes. However, even the most well-designed or -intentioned policies do not work if they are not socially accepted. This question of social acceptance of projects and policies takes center stage in the present seminar. In the first part of the seminar, the most important analytical concepts are introduced and the requirements for the fulfillment of the seminar are defined (part I). In part II, III and IV, the social acceptance of policy-measures and facilities for renewable electricity (II), heat and gas (III) and the grid (IV) are debated. In these main parts, each session is dedicated to a specific technology. Planned (but not yet confirmed) is a site visit at Mühleberg, a Swiss nuclear energy facility that is currently being decommissioned. In a last part (V), participants present their concepts for a seminar paper.
