Rehabilitation Technology

Mittwoch, 20.03.2024

Course Description: This course will focus on introduction and application of robotic devices for neurological, functional and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in patients with neurological impairments. We will introduce neurophysiological principles of rehabilitation, explain the basics of robotic design and control strategies, describe the state of the art and representative advances in rehabilitation robotic systems. Advanced topics including cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and functional electrical stimulation will also be presented. Special emphasis will be placed in the discussion of the current active research topics and their clinical application. This course will consist of weekly lectures of 2x45 min, and homework of 2 hours per week. Homework will consist of problem solving, journal paper reading, and practical exercises. A clinical guest lecture will be organised. A visit to the Institute for Rehabilitation and Performance Technology (IRPT) is programmed. Students will be able to try several rehabilitation robotic systems specially developed for neurorehabilitation training and have a first hands-on experience with functional electrical stimulation. Main Learning Outcomes: • Know about the basics of the human sensory-motor system. • Gain an overview of the latest technological development in the field of rehabilitation and assistive technology. • Gain a basic understanding of locomotion biomechanics. • Gain an overview of the technology for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. • Gain an overview of the advantages/limitations of functional electrical stimulation.
