The Qur’an: an Introduction in the Context of Christian-Muslim Encounter

This course offers an introduction to the scripture at the heart of Islam. As well as considering the Qur’an in its original context, the course will pay attention to classical and contemporary Islamic approaches to Qur’anic interpretation, and also to non-Muslim scholarship on the Qur’an. Features of the course include direct reading of a significant amount of the Qur’an in English translation, and the Qur’an in the interface between Islam and Christianity. The course will begin with an overview of some introductory topics such as the historical origins of the Qur’an, its structure, main themes and language, and its place in the lives of Muslims. Several weeks will then be dedicated to the study of a representative selection of Qur’anic texts in chronological order, relating them to the changing contexts of Muhammad’s life. Alongside this fundamental focus on the Qur’an in its original context, attention will be paid to a range of interpretations of the Qur’an, Muslim and non-Muslim. In the second half of the course the focus will move to a more thematic approach, looking at topics such as the God-humanity relationship in the Qur’an, women’s readings of the Qur’an, and the Qur’anic account of Christianity. The course will conclude with discussion of Christian approaches to the Qur’an. Students who have not previously studied Islam are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED (although not strictly required) to read a general introductory work on Islam before beginning the course, for example one of the following: • Ralf Elger, Islam: Eine Einführung • Heinz Halm, Islam: Geschichte und Gegenwart • Gudrun Krämer, Geschichte des Islam If the class includes students who are new to the study of Islam, in the first class I may offer a brief overview of the historical origins of Islam and some key topics in Islamic Studies. This may also be a helpful refresher for those who have previously studied Islam. Optional preparatory reading could include: Hans Zirker, Der Koran Nicolai Sinai, Die heilige Schrift des Islams
